והוה כד סיב שמואל ומני ית בנוהי דינין על ישראל:
yshral el dynyn bnwhy yth wmny shmwal syb kd whwh
When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.
2
והוה שום בריה בוכריה יואל ושום תניניה אביה דינין בבאר שבע:
shbe bbar dynyn abyh thnynyh wshwm ywal bwkryh bryh shwm whwh
Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.

ולא הליכו בנוהי באורחתיה ואתפניאו בתר ממון דשקר וקבילו שוחדא וצלו דינא:
dyna wtslw shwkhda wqbylw dshqr mmwn bthr wathpnyaw bawrkhthyh bnwhy hlykw wla
His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned away after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

ואתכנישו כל סבי ישראל ואתו לות שמואל לרמתא:
lrmtha shmwal lwth wathw yshral sby kl wathknyshw
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

ואמרו ליה הא את סבתא ובנך לא הליכו בארחתך כען מני לנא מלכא למדיננא ככל עממיא:
emmya kkl lmdynna mlka lna mny ken barkhthk hlykw la wbnk sbtha ath ha lyh wamrw
They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

ובאיש פתגמא בעיני שמואל כד אמרו מני לנא מלכא למדיננא וצלי שמואל קדם יי:
yy qdm shmwal wtsly lmdynna mlka lna mny amrw kd shmwal beyny pthgma wbaysh
But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

ואמר יי לשמואל קביל למימר עמא לכל דימרון לך ארי לא יתך רחיקו ארי בפולחני קצו מלמהוי מלכא עליהון:
elyhwn mlka mlmhwy qtsw bpwlkhny ary rkhyqw ythk la ary lk dymrwn lkl ema lmymr qbyl lshmwal yy wamr
Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

ככל עובדיא די עבדו מיומא דאסקית יתהון ממצרים ועד יומא הדין ושבקו פולחני ופלחו לטעות עממיא כן אינון עבדין אף לך:
lk ap ebdyn aynwn kn emmya lTewth wplkhw pwlkhny wshbqw hdyn ywma wed mmtsrym ythhwn dasqyth mywma ebdw dy ewbdya kkl
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me and served other gods, so they also do to you.

וכען קביל למימריהון ברם ארי אסהדא תסהיד בהון ותחוי להון נימוסא דמלכא דימלך עליהון:
elyhwn dymlk dmlka nymwsa lhwn wthkhwy bhwn thshyd ashda ary brm lmymryhwn qbyl wken
Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

ואמר שמואל ית כל פתגמיא דיי לעמא דשאלין מניה מלכא:
mlka mnyh dshalyn lema dyy pthgmya kl yth shmwal wamr
Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

ואמר דין יהי נימוסא דמלכא די מלך עליכון ית בניכון ידבר וימני ליה ברתיכוהי ובפרשוהי ורדפין קדם רתיכוהי:
rthykwhy qdm wrdpyn wbprshwhy brthykwhy lyh wymny ydbr bnykwn yth elykwn mlk dy dmlka nymwsa yhy dyn wamr
He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

ולמנאה ליה רבני אלפין ורבני חמשין ואכריא למיגר ניריה ולמחצד חצדיה ואומניא למעבד מאני קרביה ומאני רתיכוהי:
rthykwhy wmany qrbyh many lmebd wawmnya khtsdyh wlmkhtsd nyryh lmygr wakrya khmshyn wrbny alpyn rbny lyh wlmnah
He will appoint them to him for captains of thousands and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest; and to make his instruments of war and the instruments of his chariots.

וית בנתיכון ידבר לשמשן ולטבחן ולאפן:
wlapn wlTbkhn lshmshn ydbr bnthykwn wyth
He will take your daughters to be perfumers, to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14
וית חקליכון וית כרמיכון וזיתיכון טביא יסב ויתן לעבדוהי:
lebdwhy wythn ysb Tbya wzythykwn krmykwn wyth khqlykwn wyth
He will take your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, even your best, and give them to his servants.
15
וזרעיכון וכרמיכון יסב חד מן עסרא ויהב לרברבוהי ולעבדוהי:
wlebdwhy lrbrbwhy wyhb esra mn khd ysb wkrmykwn wzreykwn
He will take one tenth of your seed and of your vineyards, and give it to his officers and to his servants.
16
וית עבדיכון וית אמהתכון וית עולימכון שפיריא וית חמריכון ידבר למהוי עבדין עבידתא:
ebydtha ebdyn lmhwy ydbr khmrykwn wyth shpyrya ewlymkwn wyth amhthkwn wyth ebdykwn wyth
He will take your male servants, your female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys, and assign them to his own work.
17
ענכון יסב חד מן עסרא ואתון תהון ליה לעבדין:
lebdyn lyh thhwn wathwn esra mn khd ysb enkwn
He will take one tenth of your flocks; and you will be his servants.
18
ותצוחון ביומא ההוא מן קדם מלככון דאתרעיתון לכון ולא יקביל יי צלותכון ביומא ההוא:
hhwa bywma tslwthkwn yy yqbyl wla lkwn dathreythwn mlkkwn qdm mn hhwa bywma wthtswkhwn
You will cry out in that day because of your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.”

וסריבו עמא לקבלא למימר שמואל ואמרו לא אלהן מלכא יהי עלנא:
elna yhy mlka alhn la wamrw shmwal lmymr lqbla ema wsrybw
But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,
20
ונהי אף אנחנא ככל עממיא ויתפרע לנא מלכנא ויפוק ברישנא ויגיח ית קרבנא:
qrbna yth wygykh bryshna wypwq mlkna lna wythpre emmya kkl ankhna ap wnhy
that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.”
21
ושמע שמואל ית כל פתגמי עמא וסדרנון קדם יי:
yy qdm wsdrnwn ema pthgmy kl yth shmwal wshme
Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.
22
ואמר יי לשמואל קביל למימריהון ותמליך להון מלכא ואמר שמואל לאנשי ישראל אזילו גבר לקרתיה:
lqrthyh gbr azylw yshral lanshy shmwal wamr mlka lhwn wthmlyk lmymryhwn qbyl lshmwal yy wamr
Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”
